For those who are old enough to remember the late 80s, 90s and even the millennium (till he retired in 2013), cricket is synonymous with Sachin Tendulkar. The Master Blaster carried the hopes of a billion people on his shoulders every time he entered the cricket field to bat and emerged triumphant most of the times. Scoring centuries after centuries, making and breaking records became a habit of sorts for the legendary batsman over the years. So much so that one could see slogans like ‘If cricket is religion, Sachin is God’ across the fields.
The BBC had right said once that “When Sachin goes out to bat, people switch on their television sets and switch off their lives.” Now retired, Sachin continues to inspire the next generation of cricketers and brings back golden memories of the good old days of cricket.
Off the field too, he is a multi-faceted personality dabbling in social work. He launched his own app recently and even came out with an autobiography, ‘Playing It My Way’. A movie is also being made on his success story. As Sachin celebrates his 43rd birthday today, let’s look back at some of his memorable quotes over the years.
“The only thing that was on my mind was ‘I want to play for India one day’, and I was pretty sure and confident that I will.”
“I have never tried to compare myself to anyone else.”
“Every individual has his own style, his own way of presenting himself on and off the field.”
“I hate losing and cricket being my first love, once I enter the ground it’s a different zone altogether and that hunger for winning is always there.”
“Isn’t cricket supposed to be a team sport? I feel people should decide first whether cricket is a team game or an individual sport.”
“It’s important to work hard. There’s no shortcut around that.”
“Enjoy the game and chase your dreams because dreams do come true.”
“When people throw stones at you, you turn them into milestones.”
“I just keep it simple, watch the ball and play it on merit.”
“It’s not about accepting every little challenge thrown at you. Sometimes you hold back and when it is needed, you go for it.”
“Defeats do not depress me. They motivate me. One series does not impact my game. One loss does not take away my fans.” (On India’s dismal performance in England in 2011)
“It doesn’t always happen according to the way you have planned things out but I feel if you have covered most of the aspects, it does help out there in the middle.”
“Before you lay a foundation on the cricket field, there should be a solid foundation in your heart and you start building on that. After that as you start playing more and more matches, you learn how to score runs and how to take wickets.”
“With me, the match starts much, much earlier than the actual match.”
“In the first innings of my life I did not get the time to do much of what I wanted. Now that I am retired, I am trying my bit to do something for the people who have given me so much love in life.”
“I don’t want to see empty classrooms, empty libraries. I don’t want to see cattle grazing on fields meant to be cricket or football grounds.”
